Pavarotti in Memoriam

The death of Luciano Pavarotti ends what may be the most internationally

successful career in the history of opera singing. Indeed it was
Pavarotti’s extraordinary popularity that raised millions of dollars
for wounded and starving people, especially children in places such as
Bosnia, Cambodia, Kosovo, and Guatemala and for Afghan and Iraqi
refugees.

That, though, is only part of the story of his unique life and career.
Luciano Pavarotti will surely be remembered by connoisseurs as well as
his huge popular audiences as a tenor with not only an astonishing
technical mastery but also an intense power to move the emotions –
with his impeccable intonation, his enormous range of dynamic shades,
and his incandescent expressive phrasing. He was a deeply serious
and immensely feeling artist and his legacy of recordings stands as a
testament to one of the most very remarkable performers in the history
of classical music.

For this special Symphony at Seven, VPR Classical remembers Luciano
Pavarotti with a program created as a tribute for his 70th birthday
>> two years ago. It features a new, rare and exclusive in-depth
interview with Pavarotti, recollections and observations of his
performances from distinguished international musicians, music
executives, and recordings spanning his career.

Exclusively for this program, Luciano Pavarotti spoke with

host/producer Jon Tolansky at Pavarotti’s home in Modena, Italy,
recalling his legendary life and career. Amongst a wide range of
topics covered are many of Signor Pavarotti’s greatest achievements on
the operatic stage – the roles featured include Tonio (La Fille du
Regiment), the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), King Gustavus (Un ballo in
maschera), Canio (Pagliacci), Manrico (Il trovatore) Rodolfo (La
Boheme), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) and Calaf (Turandot). The
program also includes Signor Pavarotti singing concert repertoire
including Verdi’s Requiem Mass, items from The Three Tenors concerts,
and Italian songs.

Luciano Pavarotti has been a favorite artist of some of the greatest and

most important conductors in history, and this feature will include

coverage of his performances with Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber

and Sir Georg Solti, amongst others. Additionally, commenting on
Luciano Pavarotti’s artistic and vocal qualities, are many
distinguished performers and executives who have known and worked with
him over a period of four decades.

Luciano Pavarotti’s singing career is represented in this biographical

profile by recordings spanning the last 40 years. Other important
