district environmental commission has denied a permit for a 9,100-square-foot
Dollar General store near Exit 3 of Interstate 89. Last month, the commission refused to approve
plans for a Family Dollar outlet proposed for the same area.
Two national dollar store chains have plans to expand the number of
their Vermont stores in the coming year, but
they’re running into some local resistance. Opponents say the proliferation of dollar stores poses a greater threat
to the economy and character of many more towns than big box stores.
In Chester, plans to build a dollar store
have stirred up some members of the community who say the project isn’t in
keeping with the town’s character. Many turned out last night as the town’s Development Review Board met
to review the plans.
14 Inns in the small Vermont town of Chester, population just over 3,000, have
banded together with a pledge to be responsible environmental stewards. They’ve created the Chester Innkeeper’s Association, and to join, an inn must be designated by the state as a green hotel.
