Governor Peter Shumlin reached out Wednesday to the newly elected
premier of Quebec to congratulate her and to pledge to work together in
the future.
Shumlin
says the new premier was familiar with the work that Vermont has been doing, and with the trade relationship
between Quebec and Vermont.
Last week, the Quebec government of Premier Jean Charest
announced that it would extend a $58 million loan to Balcorp, a Montreal company that owns the Jeffrey Asbestos Mine in Asbestos, Quebec, which has been closed since November.
Thousands of university students continue to protest and remain on strike from classes. At issue are tuition hikes
proposed by Quebec’s ruling Liberal party.
