Vermont
State Police say several vehicles crashed in both the north and southbound
sides of I-89 in South Burlington early this afternoon. This
morning, a multiple-vehicle crash caused substantial traffic delays on
I-89 south in the area known as "Bolton Flats."
Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger will announce Thursday afternoon his proposal for a long-delayed highway
bypass in the southern part of Vermont’s largest city.
State
officials say they’re planning to appeal dozens of cases where the Federal
Emergency Management Agency has refused to cover all the costs of town flood
recovery projects.
Winter road
crews in Vermont will be using more brine instead of salt this year,
and crews will be given more discretion about how much salt and brine to apply.
Vermont State Police say Interstate 89 has become too dangerous during
winter storms. They intend to do something about it with saturation
patrols designed to slow down traffic.
Road crews will be
out on Route 2A in Colchester today laying down the first pavement under this
spring’s special supplemental Vermont state paving program.
Gov. Jim Douglas’
proposal for $80 million in new bonding for road and bridge repairs over five
years marks a switch for the governor.
Douglas had been cool to earlier proposals to raise borrowed
money through issuance of bonds to address Vermont’s infrastructure woes, saying he didn’t want to harm Vermont’s good credit rating.
About 80 miles of Vermont’s roughest roads will be getting some extra attention
this summer.
Two weeks ago Gov.
Jim Douglas announced "Operation Smooth Ride” amid complaints that this was
an unusually bad spring for potholes and frost heaves. And so he sought $3
million for extra paving projects.
