Each quarter, labor statistics report sobering news of the number of jobs the economy has lost. For college seniors, finding job amid competition with jobless professionals is especially daunting. It leaves some graduates debating whether to take jobs outside their field of study, pursue unpaid internships or consider offers they’d prefer not to take. On the next Vermont Edition, we talk with experts in career counseling from the University of Vermont and Middlebury College about the career decisions facing college seniors, and how to search for jobs in a down economy.

 

Also in the program, our discussion last week with a FairPoint executive raised a lot of questions about how the company has managed the transition from Verizon to FairPoint. Utility regulators in northern New England have issued strong warnings to the company, with a June 1 deadline for turning around is service record. David O’Brien of Vermont’s Public Service Department explains what regulators in this state are expecting from FairPoint.

 

And, at a time when newspapers are devoting fewer resources to local coverage, a tiny new paper in Brattleboro is training citizens to report the news. VPR’s Susan Keese reports on the free nonprofit newspaper The Commons.
