Mapping Vermont’s Ancient Roads

Volunteers in towns across the state have been traipsing through the woods and combing town records to determine which old roads belong on the public rolls and which don’t.  By state law, all towns are required to identify and map their ancient roads, and in some cases, they’re discovering its not easy.  Sometimes the wishes of landowners, town officials, historians, and outdoor recreation enthusiasts collide.

We’ll talk with Trevor Lashua of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns and Johnathan Croft of the Agency of Transportation.  Email your questions and comments about your towns efforts to map ancient roads to vermontedition@vpr.net.

Also, we’ll talk with Captain Larry Doane and his wife Melissa.  Doane commands Bravo Troop 1st of the 182nd of the Vermont National Guard, which will be on a mission in Afghanistan next year.  Like so many other Vermont families, the Doanes are preparing themselves and their children for the upcoming deployment.

And we’ll have a preview of an exhibit featuring five up-and-coming Vermont women artists.
