Then, for nearly 1500 Vermont guard members and their families, the war in Afghanistan is not an abstraction.

As the soldiers prepare for their overseas deployment in early 2010, we’ll hear from Sarah Chayes who first went to Afghanistan in 2001 to report on the war for NPR. 

Chayes stayed to help rebuild the country.  Her long experience living with the Afghan people gives her a unique perspective on the U.S. mission there. 

In addition to her work with a cooperative that makes skin care products from local crops, she serves as an advisor to General Stanley McChrystal who commands the forces in Afghanistan. Listen
