Vermont opened its first methadone clinic in Burlington in 2002. Currently there are five in the state serving more than 500 patients. But the need still outstrips the availability. Suboxone, a trade name for buprenorphine, is an alternative to methadone. It can be prescribed for take-home use, and can ease the need for methadone clinics.

Barbara Cimaglio, Deputy Commissioner of the Health Department’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse programs, and Dr. Deb Richter comment on the use of Suboxone and on whether the state can meet the need for licensed physicians and clinicians.
