Holocaust Remembrance Day is next week, the United States’ annual commemoration of the Holocaust and its victims. Thursday on Vermont Edition, we talk with Vermonters who are working on community and classroom education about the Holocaust for varying age groups.
First, teachers Amy Wardwell and Amanda Terwillegar open their classroom to us at Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg, where they teach an intensive semester-long class on the Holocaust and Human Behavior. Then we talk with Marion Hecht, the coordinator of Holocaust Remembrance Day for the Greater Stowe Jewish Community, and with choreographer Barbara Mullen who will be presenting the dance performance, "A Child’s View of the Holocaust" this Sunday in Stowe. And we talk with history professor Alan Steinweis, the director of the Center for Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont about how the Holocaust is taught at the college level.
Also in the program, who should run the World Bank? President Obama nominated Dartmouth College President Jim Yong Kim for the post that traditionally has been held by an American. But two other candidates, Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former Colombian Finance Minister Jose Antonio Ocampo, are also under consideration. We talk with retired World Bank manager Tom Blinkhorn of Hanover about how the next president will be chosen, and impact he or she may have.
