The
most recent NECAP results are in, and they indicate that a majority of Vermont high schoolers are not meeting standards in math and
science. Just 36 percent of 11th graders were proficient in math,
and just 30 percent were proficient in science. Students in elementary and
middle school did significantly better on the math and science exams – the drop
is concerning many educators. We talk to Education Commissioner Armando
Vilaseca, and to Judi Laird, the executive director of the Vermont Mathematics
Initiative, about what these test scores tell us, about how science and math
are being taught in schools, and how we can improve education in those subjects
for all students.

Also
on the program, the New York Times paywall went up nearly a year ago, forcing
online readers to subscribe and pay if they wanted to read more than 20
articles a month.  Many Vermont newspapers have also started charging for content. To
get a sense of how well this strategy is working, we talk to Praveen Kopalle, a
professor of marketing at the Tuck School of Business, who specializes in
pricing strategies in all kinds of industries.
