Alarm Raised About Potential Tar Sands Pipeline

Environmental groups in Maine and Vermont are raising an alarm about the potential for tar sands oil to be piped across northern New England.

The groups say the Canadian energy firm Enbridge Inc. is considering reversing the flow of an existing pipeline to send tar sands oil to Portland, Maine for export.

The pipeline runs through northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. "The company, Enbridge, that owns this pipeline currently really did call this project "Trailbreaker," said Curtis Fisher, regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation. "It’s a trailbreaker through our trail networks. It cuts across our rivers and streams. It is something that clearly is a back breaker for Vermont’s energy future," he said.

An Enbridge spokesman downplayed the concerns.

A plan to move Canadian tar sands oil through a pipeline extending through the Great Plains to the Gulf Coast has also generated debate.
