A wood-burning power plant in Burlington is celebrating its 25th birthday with an announcement that an anti-pollution device it installed in 2008 is paying off.
Burlington’s municipal electric department says it installed a $10 million nitrogen oxide reduction system in the McNeil Generating Station in 2008 to cut emissions that pollute the atmosphere.
Installing the device allows the plant to sell renewable energy credits to utilities in Connecticut which are required by law in that state to support the development of renewable energy.
Burlington Electric officials say sales of those renewable energy credits means the department can recoup the cost of the anti-pollution equipment in its first 18 months of operation.
