The legacy of Ethan Allen looms large over Vermont’s Revolutionary War history.  One of the stories that built Allen’s reputation was the surprise attack he led on the British fort at Ticonderoga.

The year was 1775, and author Richard Smith says it was not only a significant moral victory for the American soldiers, it was a significant victory for Vermont.

The history is told in Smith’s new book, "Ethan Allen and the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga: America’s First Victory."

VPR’s Jane Lindholm recently walked the grounds of Fort Ticonderoga with Richard Smith, to hear his telling of the story.
