A bridge through the town of Richmond remains amid concerns about its safety.

Transportation Agency officials closed the Bridge Street bridge Thursday, after deteriorating steel support beams were found underneath.

Two years ago the bridge over the Winooski River was reduced to one-lane traffic but remained open until this week.

The bridge, which was built in 1928, must be repaired rather than replaced because of a federal historic designation.

Town officials hope a contractor can repair the bridge in the coming weeks but don’t yet know the cost or timeframe of the project.

The closure is affecting business and a 7½-mile detour is causing delays and adding mileage for commuters and school buses at a time when fuel costs are high.
