A seemingly routine school-wide assembly turned into the surprise of a lifetime for Champlain Elementary School fourth- and fifth-grade teacher Matthew Hajdun yesterday.

The Burlington teacher was presented with the 2012 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.

The prestigious award is given to teachers relatively early in their careers. Recipients are nominated by their peers. And the award comes with a no-strings-attached $25-thousand dollar check.

Hajdun was praised for weaving Spanish throughout his curriculum.

He’s well-versed in the language after teaching at a Honduran orphanage when he graduated from Saint Michael’s College.
