(Host) In Middlebury, the select board says authorities are looking into a copper theft from a construction site over the weekend.

The incident comes as the state of Vermont is seeing a rash of copper thefts.

Last week, law enforcement and utility companies warned thieves that they’re putting their own lives at risk when they steal copper to sell it as scrap metal.

Two ski resorts in the state have also had copper material stolen from their equipment this summer.

Copper theft is an increasing nationwide trend, and each year there have been several deaths as people attempting to steal the metal have been electrocuted.

There haven’t been any deaths in Vermont.

Vermont State Police and utility companies across the state have asked the public to help by reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement.
