Derby cow named top female Holstein in world

In dairy circles, it’s like the Red Sox winning the World Series. A cow from the northern Vermont town of Derby has won the title best female Holstein in the world.

Elleta Skybuck Lucy — or Lucy for short — is a seven-year-old cow who belongs to the Nelson farm family of Derby.

She won top state honors, first prize at the Eastern States Exposition near Springfield, Massachusetts, and was recently crowned the top female Holstein on the planet at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.

Judges praised her trim figure — which means her energy goes to making milk rather than body fat, her sleek coat, straight back-line, big udder and ample veins showing.
