Disability Advocates Alerted To Problems With SSI Changes

Advocates for disabled Vermonters are decrying what they say are problems with a newly instituted system of electronic payments for Social Security beneficiaries.

The Vermont Center for Independent Living says it’s been alerted this week to a spate of problems with people being switched to debit card payments without adequate notification.

Harold Nadeau, who has polio and uses a wheelchair, says he became aware this week that bills automatically deducted from his checking account weren’t being paid because his monthly Social Security check had not been deposited as usual. He said he expects more people will notice problems in their accounts by early next week.

A request for comment from the press office at Social Security headquarters in Baltimore drew no immediate response.
