Douglas calls for solution to health care crisis

Governor Jim Douglas and five other governors are scheduled to meet with President Barack Obama today to talk about health care reform.

Douglas co-hosted a White House health care forum in Burlington in March. He says he plans to urge the Obama adminstration and congressional leaders to focus on cutting health care costs, managing chronic illnesses and not on how insurance is structured.

At issue is whether to set up a government-sponsored health insurance plan, which would get federal money for start-up costs, but then be financed through premiums.

Douglas says he’s opposed to a government-run program.

He says Vermont’s state-subsidized Catamount Health with plans provided by private companies is a better model.
