Eight months after the slaying of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett, Vermont’s governor signed into law a bill aimed at improving the state’s prosecution of sex crimes.

Gov. Jim Douglas, who signed the bill in Bethel on Wednesday, says it makes Vermont an even safer place for children.

The bill, which was drafted in response to the girl’s slaying, establishes a mandatory 25-year minimum term for some offenders and provides for educational outreach for parents, educators and others, to help them identify sexual abuse.
