Vermont’s elections director says she and her boss, Secretary of State Jim Condos, will push lawmakers in their upcoming session to move Vermont’s state-office primary from late August to May or June.

Elections Director Kathy Scheele says this is the second election cycle in a row in which a gubernatorial primary recount has raised fears the state won’t make a federal deadline. General election ballots need to be mailed 45 days before election day to military and other overseas voters.

Scheele says she’d also like to have two weeks between the primary election and when the secretary of state’s office finalizes official results.

She says primary election ballots are more complex than general election ones, because there are usually primaries in three major parties.
