VPR has been observing March as Women’s History month looking back at Vermont women who’ve played significant roles in the military, in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to World War Two.

Courtney Beaulieu is one of those women. The 21-year old grew up in Swanton and now lives in Morrisville, and returned late last year from Afghanistan, where she served as a member of the Vermont National Guard.

Beaulieu tells VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb her decision to join the Guard was driven by practical concerns, as well as strong family ties to the military.
