(Host) The chief executive at Vermont’s largest hospital may be leaving her post after eight years on the job.

Officials at Fletcher Allen Health Care say CEO Melinda Estes broke the news to hospital trustees last week.

Mike Noble is a Fletcher Allen spokesman.

(Noble) "Well, Dr. Estes is exploring an opportunity in a major Midwest health care system. She has informed the board of this at their meeting on June 14."

(Host) Noble said that if Estes does leave, trustees will appoint interim leadership and then launch a national search to find a replacement.

Estes came to Fletcher Allen in 2003 after its previous CEO was ousted in a financial scandal and later indicted on federal fraud charges.

Estes is widely credited with restoring Fletcher Allen’s credibility with state officials and leading the institution back to financial health.
