Lake Iroquois Experiences High Phosphorous Levels

The town of Williston is reporting high phosphorous levels in Lake Iroquois.

But officials say they’re challenged in managing blue-green algae blooms because four towns co-manage the lake.

The Williston Select Board was presented a report recently that outlines how co-ownership has been difficult.

According to the report, much of Lake Iroquois currently has high phosphorous levels and has experienced blue-green algae blooms this season.

Also, a number of boats move directly between Lake Iroquois and Lake Champlain the. So officials fear the two lakes can be cross contaminated.

The Lake Iroquois Recreational District currently includes Williston, Richmond, Hinesburg and St. George.

A public meeting is scheduled in Williston next week to discuss the idea of creating a special zoning district for the Lake Iroquois watershed.
