Legalizing video slots in NH anchors budget plan

Gambling supporters and opponents are counting votes and lobbying hard to get their way Wednesday when the state Senate votes on an $11.6 billion budget play anchored by legalizing video slots.

The vote is expected to be very close.

The Senate Finance Committee chose gambling over new taxes on capital gains and estates included in the budget the House passed in April. The gambling measure would allow up to 13,000 video slot machines at three race tracks and two undetermined sites in northern New Hampshire.

Gambling supporters want to add another site in Hudson. Opponents want to strip the measure out of the budget entirely.
