Legislature Encourages Multiple Modes Of Transportation

There’s a push for new legislation in Vermont that would encourage multiple modes of transportation – other than just cars.

The "Complete Streets" initiative is an effort to redesign roadways so they’ll be safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Jennifer Wallace-Brodeur is with AARP Vermont.

She sees the Complete Streets proposal as a quality of life issue.

(Wallace-Brodeur) " It’s really how do people stay connected to the community and how does our transportation system support that so people don’t get stuck at home and cut back on the things they like to do simply because they don’t have the transportation, the way to get around that they need. "

(Host) Complete Streets projects are already being tested in Burlington and Norwich.

A federal bill passed last year requires the new policies to be applied to federally funded transportation projects.

State legislation would mandate this type of planning in Agency of Transportation projects.
