The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 5.0 earthquake has hit the Ontario-Quebec border region of Canada.  The quake occurred at 1:41 p.m. EDT (1741 GMT). There were no immediate reports of damages.

Residents of several areas, including the city of Toronto and parts of upstate New York and northern and central Vermont, could feel the ground shaking on Wednesday afternoon.

Vermont State Geologist Larry Becker says the Saint Lawrence Valley is prone to moderate earthquakes. The last major earthquake to be felt in this region was centered near Plattsburgh in 2002.
