The trial of a Colchester woman who’s charged with hitting a pedestrian with her car while texting has ended with a plea deal.

Nineteen-year-old Emma Viera pleaded guilty yesterday to grossly negligent operation of a motor vehicle with injury resulting.

She’ll receive a five-year deferred sentence. Viera could serve up to six months in jail or be sentenced to home confinement as part of the deal.

She’s accused of striking 53-year-old Deb Drewniak in August, 2011, as Drewniak was walking her dog in the dark. Drewniak was injured and her dog was killed.

The conviction will be erased from Viera’s record if she stays out of trouble during her five years of probation.
