Police: No foul play in Garza death

Middlebury Police say they do not believe there was any foul play in the death of Nicholas Garza.

An autopsy yesterday confirmed that the body pulled from Otter Creek on Tuesday is that of the 19-year-old Middlebury College freshman. The cause of death hasn’t been determined, but Police Chief Tom Hanley says it doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

Police say they’re still trying to figure out what made Garza leave a campus gathering and head for the river in the center of Middlebury, rather than toward his dorm.

The student’s February fifth disappearance had prompted extensive searching since then by police, family, friends and volunteers.

Hanley spotted the body in the river late Tuesday afternoon, and it was pulled from a logjam in the stream a few hours later.
