Program to help hurting dairy farmers

Agriculture officials in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are urging consumers to buy local milk and dairy products to support area farmers.

Officials say New England has lost over 100 dairy farms in the last two years and could lose its ability to maintain a viable dairy industry with the current low prices paid to farmers.

Farmers are being paid about 97 cents per gallon of milk, which costs about $1.80 to produce.

Agriculture leaders from the three states plan to launch a new program on Monday to support dairy farmers.
