Sewage Overflows Into Missisquoi

Authorities say an unknown amount of untreated sewage flowed into Vermont’s Missisquoi River after heavy rains this week.

Vermont’s Wastewater Management Division also reported that 54,000 gallons of treated and partly disinfected effluent overflowed into the river on Wednesday.

Rodney Allen, chief operator of the Enosburg Falls facility, said the overflow was greater than the system’s 30,000 gallon tank could handle.

He told the Burlington Free Press such an overflow is unusual.

Lake advocates say upgrades in infrastructure are needed to prevent such discharge.
