Bicycle riders who ignore the rules of the road are asking for a traffic ticket in one Vermont town.
Shelburne Police Chief James Warden says officers are writing tickets for "blatant" offenses such as running stop signs or red lights. Warden tells the Burlington Free Press the crackdown is in response to numerous complaints this spring about scofflaw bicyclists on the town’s scenic roads.
The tickets have led to a burst of comments on the website of the Green Mountain Bicycle Club. One rider reports getting a $214 ticket and two points off the driver’s license for rolling through a stop sign.
Warden says his department is not out to get bicyclists, but it’s gotten to the point where police had to do something to make sure no one gets hurt.
