Shelburne To Vote On ‘Form-Based Zoning Code’ For Route 7 Development

Residents in the town of Shelburne will vote in November on whether to explore a so-called "form based zoning code" for development. The goal is to fight unchecked commercial development and suburban sprawl.

The town will consider a bond to spend up to $70,000. Consultants would be hired to develop a new vision for Route 7 and to adopt regulations for a mixed business and residential district.

Last year, Shelburne got a grant from the American Institute of Architects to develop a plan to transform Route 7 into the town’s economic Main Street.

The plan calls for pedestrian and bike lanes, and for economic development that encourages businesses to locate in the historic village rather than on the outskirts of town.

Proponents argue that the zoning code makes permitting simpler while protecting the fabric of downtown.

City officials in Newport have already implemented the code, and South Burlington’s City Council is considering it.

Shelburne’s Select Board voted earlier this month to put the question on the November ballot.
