In choosing Brian Searles for Transportation Secretary and Waterbury Rep. Sue Minter as the state’s new deputy secretary of transportation, Peter Shumlin is taking both a traditional and non-traditional approach to solving transportation challenges.

Speaking on Vermont Edition reporter Bob Kinzel told host Jane Lindholm that Brian Searles previously served in the role for four years under Howard Dean in the 1990s.  He says Searles has first hand knowledge of the transportation problems facing the state and the challenges of getting a huge agency to respond to them in a timely way.

Kinzel says Sue Minter will bring a sense of urgency to the agency and will be willing to explore new funding options to pay for transportation projects.
