Peter Shumlin was officially elected governor Thursday morning by the Legislature.

And Phil Scott was officially elected lieutenant governor.

Neither won an outright majority in the November elections.

The Constitution requires the Legislature to choose the top offices if a candidate falls short of 50 percent.

In a joint assembly, lawmakers filled out secret ballots to formally close Vermont’s election season.

It also cleared the way for Scott to be inaugurated during a ceremony in the Senate chamber.

Shumlin’s inauguration later in the afternoon will take place in the House chamber before a large crowd that will include the Supreme Court and former governors.
