Vermont is moving closer to universal recycling.

Governor Peter Shumlin signed a bill into law Thursday morning that creates mandatory recycling and composting requirements to be phased in over the next few years. Waster haulers will eventually be required to collect leaf and yard, as well as food waste.

And the disposal of recyclable material in landfills will eventually be prohibited.

Officials say Vermonters are throwing away over $7 million worth of waste that could be recycled or composted and the state’s landfills are nearing capacity.
