Peter Shumlin will take over as Vermont’s new governor today, with promises to jumpstart the state’s economy and close a projected $150 million budget gap for the next fiscal year.

Shumlin is scheduled to take the oath of office at 1:30 this afternoon and then deliver an inaugural address. The speech is expected to continue on a central theme of his campaign – the need to bring new jobs to Vermont.

He’ll follow the inaugural address on January 25th with a budget speech that will lay out more specifics on how he wants to use spending on specific state programs to achieve his goals.

Meanwhile, Phil Scott is to be sworn in as lieutenant governor and is expected to make inaugural remarks in the Vermont Senate.
