Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell doesn’t like the way Burlington city officials handled the finances of Burlington Telecom, but he says he won’t intervene in a prosecutor’s decision not to press criminal charges.
The municipally-owned telecom improperly used $17 million in city taxpayers’ money, but Chittenden County prosecutor T.J. Donovan said no one would be prosecuted criminally.
In a letter this week to City Councilor Paul Decelles, Sorrell said the decision was Donovan’s to make but added he’s frustrated that city officials weren’t more forthright about their actions in propping up the telecom. The Burlington Free Press says Sorrell sent the letter in response to one from Decelles in which the city councilor sought information about alleged misconduct by city officials.
