(Host) Back to our series reviewing the top stories of the year.

Today in "Sounds of 2008,” we remember the condition our roads were in after another tough winter. You remember. They were rough.

In April, while he was still transportation secretary, Neale Lunderville took a ride on some of those rough roads.

And he warned not to expect any quick fixes.

(Lunderville) "That’s a big frost heave we just went over. The fact is we’re just going to never have the budgets to do all the work that ideally from an engineer’s perfect world that we’d want to do on these roads."

(Host) The administration did put several million dollars into emergency repairs. But that didn’t do much to address the backlog in transportation work.
