Montpelier Democrat Jim Condos has taken his oath of office as Vermont’s new secretary of state.

Condos’ swearing in yesterday followed that of the state’s new governor, Peter Shumlin, who also administered oaths of office to Auditor Tom Salmon, Treasurer Jeb Spaulding and Attorney General William Sorrell.

The oath taken by Spaulding drew a few laughs from the crowd that packed the Vermont House chamber, especially the part in which he promised to faithfully execute the office of treasurer.

The laughs came because he’ll be resigning that office immediately to take a job as administration secretary in Shumlin’s administration.

Shumlin has said he will appoint Beth Pearce, who has been deputy treasurer, to serve out Spaulding’s term as treasurer.
