The fiddle is central to many styles of music played in Vermont over the years:  From traditional Irish music dating back generations to contemporary dance hall songs popular in the 1950s.

This week is our series "The Fiddling Tradition," VPR and the Vermont Folklife Center look at how the music has been passed down over generations.

In our final segment, we hear from Pete Sutherland and Oliver Scanlon.

Our series "The Fiddling Tradition" was co-produced by Andy Kolovos and Steve Zind.

And this note, there are two events taking place this evening:

Adam Boyce plays with the Vermont Fiddle Orchestra July 20th at 8p.m. at Barre’s Canadian Club.

And the Cracker Barrel Fiddlers Contest also takes place on July 20th at 7 p.m. on the Newbury Common.
