(Host) A law enforcement sweep in the Connecticut River Valley has resulted in the arrest of two dozen people on drug charges.

VPR’s Ross Sneyd has more.

(Sneyd) The Vermont Drug Task Force labeled the sweep "Operation Connecticut Valley 2010."

Detectives from the state police, seven town police departments, and the Windham and Windsor county sheriff’s departments were part of the effort.

Undercover officers from the various agencies fanned out and began buying a variety of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, marijuana and prescription painkillers.

They’ve arrested 24 people, mostly on sales and possession charges, and warrants have been issued for five others.

State Police Sergeant John Merriman says the investigation is still under way. Because he works under cover, he declined to go on tape.

But Merriman says detectives have linked a number of the sales to the same supplier and hope to have more arrests to report soon.

The majority of those arrested came from three towns – Springfield, Bellows Falls and Brattleboro.

Merriman says that reflects those towns’ easy access from Interstate 91 to drug suppliers in southern New England.

For VPR News, I’m Ross Sneyd.
