Utility Merger May Not Translate To Ratepayer Savings

As GazMetro’s bid to purchase Central Vermont Public Service and merge it with Green Mountain Power moves forward, many questions have been raised. Among them, where any cost savings from the merger will go.

When the deal was first announced, GazMetro said that customers would enjoy lower rates from the $144 million in savings the merger would create. But new written testimony from two expert witnesses says these ratepayer savings are, "largely illusory."

Vermont Press Bureau Chief, Peter Hirschfeld, has been writing about the issue. He gave VPR’s Jane Lindholm an update.
