(Host) Students at the University of Vermont observed Veterans Day by honoring each of the 6,313 veterans who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Similar events were held on college campuses throughout the country. Collectively the events were billed as a "Remembrance Day National Roll Call."

The tribute started at 6:30 this morning, when students planted a small U-S flag for each soldier on the campus green.

A half hour later, participants began reading off the names of each fallen soldier, beginning with the first to die and concluding – nearly seven hours later – with soldiers who died over the past few days.

Collier Harman is one of the student organizers.  She says the flags lent a visual component to UVM’s National Roll Call event.

(Harman) "It was a very good visual. We had the names there being read for hours, but just looking at the sheer number. I was very powerful."

(Host) The event ended by observing a nationwide synchronized moment of silence.
