The heads of the Vermont State Colleges and the University of Vermont say they’ll work with the Douglas administration on a suggestion to merge the two institutions.

But both VSC Chancellor Robert Clarke and UVM President Daniel Fogel say much work would have to be done before the schools could be merged.

In his inaugural speech Thursday, Governor Jim Douglas proposed increasing higher education funding by 20%, but he also called for combining the two systems.

Clarke and Fogel say they’re grateful Douglas recognizes that higher education needs more state funding.
