A celebrated Vergennes principal who was on medical leave is now facing charges of driving under the influence.

Vermont State Police say Vergennes Union High School co-principal Ed Webbley drove his vehicle into his garage at his home in Bristol Monday night.

Police say Webbley’s wife told them that her husband was highly intoxicated at the time of the accident, and that he was a danger to himself and others.

Last spring, Webbley was named the principal of the year by the Vermont Principals’ Association.

Tom O’Brien is Superintendent of the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union. He says that Webbley was on medical leave to deal with a chronic pain condition.

O’Brien says he spoke with Webbley Tuesday to corroborate the police report that he had been processed for a DUI. He says the news was certainly disconcerting, and that he planned to address the school staff Tuesday afternoon.

Webbley was the second Vergennes Union High School principal in the past decade to earn the top principal honor.
