Vermont mulls allowing registration right up to Election Day

With nine other states already doing it, Vermont is now considering whether to allow people to register to vote all the way up to Election Day.

Currently, registrations end six days prior to elections, customarily on the Wednesday prior to a Tuesday election.

But lawmakers in Montpelier are mulling whether to eliminate the deadline altogether.

Testifying before a legislative committee yesterday, Vermont Public Interest Research Group executive director Paul Burns told lawmakers that allowing same-day registration could boost voter turnout by nearly 5 percent.

Town clerks and local election officials like the idea but some have concerns about the logistics of it.

South Burlington’s town clerk Donna Kinville says she and other clerks fear voter fraud would increase.
