A new report confirms what many Vermonters already knew or suspected: The state’s public colleges are the most expensive in the country.
The average annual tuition at the University of Vermont and state colleges — which doesn’t include room, board and other expenses rose 7% this year to $10,428.
The College Board’s annual Trends in College Pricing report says that’s more than 68% above the national average for tuition at public colleges and universities.
University of Vermont vice president for student and campus life Tom Gustafson says the problem is a shortage of funding from the Legislature.
And he says he doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.
