Green Mountain College says it has euthanized Lou, a member of its senior oxen team. The college says Lou’s condition was worsening and his quality of life would deteriorate through winter.

In a statement released Sunday morning, the college said Lou was euthanized earlier this morning and an announcement has been sent to students, faculty and staff.

Bill, the other member of the pair, will not be sent to a sanctuary but will continue to to live at the college farm.

Lou and Bill were retired this summer from the college’s working farm. Despite student protests, the school planned to turn them into beef products to be served in the college dining hall.
