The state of New Hampshire certainly got everyone’s attention this year when they charged a 17 year old hiker 25,000 dollars for his mountain-top rescue.  Vermont is one of 8 states in the US that, like new Hampshire, have rescue repayment laws that permit errant outdoorsmen and women to be charged for their own recklessness. 

VPR’s Jane Lindholm talks with Brian Lindner, one of the founding members of the Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team about the logistics, risks, and expenses of wilderness rescue.
